Dear Brown Engineering Community,
After 12 years at Brown, and two as Dean, I will be moving on to Notre Dame University as of July 1st to serve as Dean of the College of Science. I have had a wonderful time at Brown, working with many great colleagues and staff members. Professor Rod Clifton will be taking the Dean's position. I am delighted that Rod has accepted this position during this very important stage in the history of Brown Engineering. During his tenure as Interim Dean of Engineering, Professor Clifton will work closely with faculty, alumni, administrators, and friends of the Division to take important steps toward realizing its ambitious goals and aspirations.
Professor Clifton, Rush C. Hawkins University Professor, previously served as Dean of Engineering at Brown University from 1974-1979 and 1998-2003. His expertise will serve us well as we continue to grow. Professor Clifton's research includes the development of experimental methodologies for studying the mechanical behavior of materials at high strain rates. His research applications include high speed machining, armor penetration, shear band formation, martensitic phase transformations, elastohydrodynamic lubrication, and dynamic fracture. A second research focus involves the measurement of the high frequency, viscoelastic response of soft, biological tissues, especially vocal folds. Professor Clifton, an internationally renowned solid mechanician, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His professional awards include: Prager Medal, Society of Engineering Science; Murray Medal, Society for Experimental Mechanics; Timoshenko Medal, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME); and Fellow, ASME. Professor Clifton has many teaching interests in solid mechanics and has been the concentration advisor for our Civil Engineering Program. The Division is delighted to have such an esteemed colleague as the next Dean of Engineering. We look forward to having Professor Clifton expand on his previous impact on the Division.
I wish you all the best in the future. I will miss you all.
Best regards,
Gregory P. Crawford
